McConnell criticized for involvement in court case

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has inserted himself into the latest campaign-finance case before the U.S. Supreme Court. His involvement has spurred groups opposed to special-interest money in campaigns to take to the airwaves to criticize the Kentucky Republican.

Nonprofit groups Public Campaign Action Fund and USAction on Friday launched a television ad across much of Kentucky.

The 30-second ad bashes McConnell's role in efforts the groups say are aimed at eliminating campaign contribution limits. The commercial warns if McConnell's side wins, it would set off an unlimited influx of campaign cash from lobbyists, bankers and oil executives.

McConnell sees the case as more narrow and one that would not remove all contribution caps.

McConnell spokesman Robert Steurer says it's a First Amendment issue for the senator.
