Necklace in memory of former UK football player found after 12 years of searching

OLDHAM COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - It was 20 years ago this summer that University of Kentucky football player Trent Diguiro was shot to death at a Lexington home.

After his death, his mother received a special necklace that helped keep his memory alive. But when she lost it in a Oldham County creek, she thought it was gone forever.

It's not just a necklace rather a memory of Ann Diguiro's son, Trent Diguiro, who was only 20 years old when he was killed.

"When I opened my present, I just cried cause I knew what it was," said Ann Diguiro, Trent's mother. "And when it said, 'Mom, I'm right here' on the back was the most important thing to me."

She received the gift from her husband more than a decade ago. Mike Diguiro says he knew his wife would cherish the gold pendant in remembrance of their UK football player.

"I want something that has an angel on it because Ann truly believes in angels," said Mike Diguiro, Trent's father.

But only four months after opening that present, Ann Diguiro thought she had lost it forever.

"I was going over this little bridge and the clasp broke and the pendant fell between the boards," said Ann Diguiro.

"We always thought someday somebody was going to catch a fish, and they were going to cut it open and that pendant was gong to be in there," said Mike Diguiro.

These parents never gave up looking for the special gift. And it's a good thing they didn't because rain flooded the creek a few weeks ago and finally drained, revealing the necklace just three feet from where she lost it 12 years ago in what they had coined the Angel Pond.

"I could see just the clasp and a little tiny bit sticking out of the mud in the sunshine," said Ann Diguiro. "I had to bend over and get it in the mud again, and I picked it up in my hand and I held my hand so tight and walked up to the house. Mike was in the kitchen and I just opened my hand. And he said, 'You've got to be kidding.'"

The necklace was a Christmas present for Ann Diguiro made from a necklace her son, Trent, always wore.
