LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Local and state leaders are celebrating the opening of the new Eastern State Hospital.
The new state of the art hospital is officially open. It's located at UK's Coldstream Research Campus.
The 239 bed, 300,000 square foot facility will provide a modern setting for psychiatric treatment. Updated bedrooms that provide tons of natural light, and safety proof features to keep patients from hurting themselves, are just a few of the new amenities.
There's also a built-in salon and gym to help patients look their best and get back on their feet. Large conference rooms will keep staff up to date with ongoing education. An on site courtroom also doubles as a chapel.
Hospital officials say these upgrades were well worth the wait.
"200 years ago citizens of Lexington advocated for a new facility. Here we are in 2013 and we have an incredible new resource due to the power of advocacy of local government, state government and advocacy groups," says Allen J. Brenzel, M.D., interim chief medical officer.
The hospital staff will begin receiving patients from the old hospital on September 10th. Hospital officials say the acquired brain injury unit will open in the spring.
