One dead after overnight police chase in Shelby County

One man is dead following an overnight pursuit in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Sheriff's office received a complaint of a reckless driver on I-64 near mm 43 just before 4am Friday morning. The pursuit began after officers attempted to stop the vehicle, a red Chevy Blazer, for reckless driving and excessive speed over 100 mph.

Kentucky State Police received a request to assist the Shelby County Sheriff's office in a pursuit after the vehicle refused to stop.

Police say the vehicle left the interstate onto Taylorsville Road, then traveling onto KY 148 for about 8 miles when it failed to maneuver a curve, left the roadway and struck a tree line. The drive of the vehicle was ejected from the vehicle, which overturned and caught fire.

Officers at the scene attempted to extinguish the fire before the fire departments arrived.

The driver of the vehicle, Marcus A. Slone, 29 of Brandenburg was pronounced dead at the scene by the Shelby County Coroner's office.

The collision is still under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
