Police say man stole checks from mail; attempted to cash

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington police have arrested a man accused of stealing checks out of the mail and cashing them into his own bank account.

29-year-old Jerry Arnett was arrested Friday and charged with attempting to cash two checks that didn't belong to him.

Police say Arnett admitted to tracing his name over the original payee's name on the checks, altering them before using his personal account to cash them. He was able to cash one check for $1,000 but a second check was declined.

Arnett is charged with two counts Forgery and two counts Possession of Stolen Mail.
