FLEMING COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Two men are dead in what police say is a murder, suicide. WKYT has learned a son shot his father and then lead police on a chase before turning the gun on himself.
For the small community of Hillsboro, they say it's the type of crime that has them shocked and saddened.
Sgt. Jim Bowling says, "All we know right now is that it was a father and son argument that escalated into a shooting."
Kentucky State Police say they were called to a home on Colgax around one Thursday morning. When they got there they found Ricky Crawford had been shot to death and their suspect was Crawford's son, David.
The twist has many in the community shocked.
Herman Shelley knew Ricky. He says, "They may have had their problems, but I didn't expect nothing like this. Of course fathers and sons have their disagreements and stuff like that, but no one ever expects it to carry on that far."
Shelley says he's grown up with Ricky, and even worked with him, and joked around with him at the Shelley's country store.
He says in the small community everyone pretty much knows everyone else, so this news is affecting them all.
Shelley says, "Kind of shocked that anything like that could happen in this area."
This story takes an even deeper turn, though. As police were at the Crawford house they say David passed by and then took off leading police on a brief chase.
Sgt. Bowling says, "A trooper and a deputy had made a traffic stop on the vehicle, and the guy shot himself in front of the trooper and his deputy."
Police say both bodies have been sent off to Frankfort for an autopsy. Investigators say they're going to continue searching for answers into why this happened.
Police say David Crawford lived at home with his father.
