Registration open for Governor’s Safety and Health Conference

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 8, 2014) – In an effort to increase safety and health in workplaces across the Commonwealth, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet will co-host the 30th annual Governor’s Safety and Health Conference and Exposition in Louisville next month.

“In keeping with our newly-launched Kentucky Health Now initiative, my administration has made improving the health and wellness of Kentucky’s workforce an extremely high priority, and that’s exactly the goal of this conference,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “Having healthy and safe workers not only helps boost productivity, it betters the overall quality of life in the Commonwealth.”

The theme for this year’s Governor’s Safety and Health Conference is “exercise safety for a healthy workforce.”

The Governor launched kyhealthnow in February as an aggressive and wide-ranging initiative to reduce incidents and deaths from Kentucky’s dismal health rankings and habits. It builds on Kentucky’s successful implementation of health care reform and uses multiple strategies over the next several years to improve the state’s collective health.

“The Governor’s Safety and Health Conference brings together safety managers and health professionals from all over Kentucky,” said Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary Larry L. Roberts. “Not only are there valuable courses and informative speakers at the conference, but awards and scholarships will be presented to companies and students who have put a priority on safety and health.”

The 30th Annual Governor’s Safety and Health Conference and Exposition will take place May 6-9, 2014, at the Galt House in Louisville. The conference will feature pre-conference courses along with general sessions with outstanding keynote speakers, and concurrent workshops focusing on state of the art techniques, current issues, and trends in workplace safety and health. More than 50 companies from across Kentucky will be recognized with the Governor’s Safety and Health Award, which honors outstanding safety and health performance.

The Labor Cabinet hosts the conference in conjunction with the Kentucky Safety and Health Network Inc. (KSHN), a nonprofit organization representing membership from business, education, government and labor with a mission to increase awareness of safety and health in the workplace.

“We are extremely excited about this year’s conference,” said KSHN President Annette Calvert. “There are so many wonderful activities planned with an increased focus on incorporating health promotion and traditional occupational health and safety programs at the worksite. Simple and low cost programs can positively impact the health, safety and productivity of the workforce.”

The conference will feature a fun run/walk, a golf scramble, several pre-conference courses, a reception banquet, a silent auction benefiting the Scholastic Achievement for Education (SAFE) Scholarship Program, and a presentation of winners of the SAFE scholarships.

The SAFE Scholarship Program provides scholarships to full-time eligible undergraduate and graduate college students who are enrolled in a degree program for occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene or a related field. The Kentucky Safety and Health Network Foundation distributes approximately $40,000 in scholarships each year at the Governor’s Safety and Health Conference.

There are fees per person for registration, with pre-registration fees (on or before May 2) costing $450, full conference onsite registration (after May 2) costing $550. One day pre-registration is $325 and onsite one day registration is $425. Registration includes annual KSHN membership dues. For more information on registration, call (502) 564-2719.
