Residents evacuate after car catches fire in Lexington parking garage

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) Firefighters scrambled to put out a car fire on the ground floor of a parking garage in the Chevy Chase neighborhood early Friday morning.

The fire started around 5:30 in the morning in the parking garage under the Chevy Chase Plaza condos on Euclid St., near its intersection with High St. Alarms and sprinklers immediately went off, and firefighters said the sprinklers kept the fire from spreading until they got there to put it out.

Residents in the condos were evacuated as a precaution. They stood in the street in sub-freezing temperatures, many of them still in their night-clothes, others holding their pets, and watched as firefighters worked to make sure the fire was out.

One woman told WKYT that even though the fire was on the ground floor, and there were two more floors of parking garage between the fire and her condo, she could still smell the smoke in her home before she had to evacuate.

When WKYT cameras arrived, the owner of the car was speaking with police. Officials later said the man had fallen asleep in his car with the engine running when it caught fire.
