RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - One man is behind bars after police say he stabbed an EKU student multiple times.
It happened around 2:30 Friday morning on Wellington Court in Richmond, which is near EKU's campus. Police say an argument started between the two men at Madison Gardens restaurant earlier in the night then continued at the home.
Police say Paris Charles stabbed the victim with a pocket knife. Family members tell us the victim is 28-year-old Mitchell Rogers, a student at Eastern Kentucky University.
Rogers was stabbed at least nine times in his stomach, side and neck. Charles was arrested at the scene and charged with first degree assault.
Police tell us alcohol was involved in this incident.
"The suspect and the victim had been to one of our local restaurants downtown earlier in the evening, had an argument there, went back to the victim's residence and argued some more," says Asst. Chief Bob Mott, Richmond Police. "It wound up escalating into the stabbing. They had friends in common, and I'm not sure of their relationship between the two of them exactly, but obviously he got invited back."
The victim's family members tell us he's still at UK Hospital in critical condition.
Police say there were other witnesses in the home when the stabbing happened. Our crew at the scene spoke to some of them off camera who told us they were shaken up about the incident.
"We hardly ever have police on this street. Hardly, hardly ever. It was pretty disturbing being that was right near campus. And there's a lot of students that live up and down this street," said neighbor Jessica Durham, a graduate student at EKU.
