RICHMOND, Ky., (WKYT) It's the day burned into memory for many of us, December 14, 2012, when 20 young students and 6 adults were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The one year anniversary of the shooting is Saturday.

Jon Akers, the Director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety, says what happened inside that school a year ago has changed what happens inside schools here too.

Akers still remembers the horror that came with learning 26 people were shot and killed in the school massacre.

"The hair on the back of my neck just stood up, I was scared to death," he said.

He says he immediately evaluated Kentucky’s school security and saw room for improvement.

"The schools now are required to update their emergency management plans annually. All of the kids have to go through the four drills: fire, severe weather, earthquake and lockdown," Akers said.

Akers says they are working to add more officers to schools over the next year.

He says there are over 1,200 schools in Kentucky but there are only 240 school resource officers.

Since the Newtown, CT shooting, they also turned their attention to buildings, installing security monitors and buzzer systems and always keeping the doors locked.

Akers is also offering school districts a mesh material for windows and doors that would keep someone from shooting their way into a school the way Adam Lanza did at Sandy Hook.

"We're very serious about what we're doing here and most of the kids are having a greater sense of immediacy when it comes to school emergencies," he said.

Akers says as he and the rest of America turns their attention back to Sandy Hook, this time it's with hope that the halls of learning will again be recognized as safe.
