Scott County officials: 'not concerned' with new game time

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The weather is already impacting a lot of high school football fans. Because of this winter storm the Scott County High School championship game against Meade County has been postponed in Bowling Green.

In a press release Friday the KHSAA said, "After reviewing all of the available data/information and the most educated predictions, the KHSAA is making schedule adjustments for the rest of the weekend, and changes to a few of the event instructions to help with this weekend's weather situation. Though there are dozens of factors that went into the schedule revisions, the first and foremost concerns have been competitor safety, and the travel needs of the entire school communities, especially the evenings when ice is highly anticipated. All 12 schools through their senior administration, have been involved in the lengthy discussions about options and individual situations considered, ranging from those three miles from the facility, to many hours away. In the end, the teams have committed at this time to being able to accommodate the schedule changes."

Today WKYT spoke with officials in Scott County who say they are not only concerned about the safety of the players on the field, but also the hundreds of fans traveling to see them.

The game between Scott County and Meade County has been moved to Saturday afternoon at 6:00 p.m.

Scott County High School Principal Frank Howatt believes the move will be good for the players and fans.

"You just don't know what the weathers going to do. We don't have a crystal ball. We're hoping this is better. It seems by the forecast that this seems to be the best option."

Thursday, Scott County officials announced that if the game stayed with its original kickoff for Friday they wouldn't take the band and likely wouldn't take the cheerleaders or dance team either. For Saturday, the whole crew will be there.

"They've been with us every step of the way this year, so we're really happy to be able to bring them down with us."

There is another round of winter weather coming late Saturday night but Howatt says they should be back in town before it gets here.

"We'll still be arriving back here pretty late, close to midnight or so, but hopefully we'll be ahead of that weather and it's going to be a whole lot more manageable for our team and our fans."

The school had planned to hold a viewing party in the gym if the game had gone on Friday. They don't plan to do that tomorrow since they say more people should be able to make the trip.
