Shooting near campus spooks students

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - What police say started as an attempted robbery, took a violent turn Sunday night.

WKYT is tracking the investigation into a shooting that injured a UK student outside a home not far from campus. It happened late Sunday night along Elizabeth Street in Lexington. UK Police issued a public safety notice after the shooting to alert students.

Students living off campus, near Elizabeth Street, are a bit unsettled after hearing about the shooting a few doors down.

"We locked our doors in our house because apparently he was on the loose," noted senior Steven Johnson, "the fact that they got away is what made me want to lock my door."

Police tell us the two men attempted to rob a UK senior living on Elizabeth Street, and ended up shooting him. He's expected to recover from the gun shots wounds to his head and lower back.

"I think it's a pretty safe neighborhood for the most part. There's some areas at night you probably shouldn't go in, but for the most part during the day I feel fine walking around," said junior Jesse Daniels.

Campus police issued a public safety notice Monday morning. It let students know about Sunday night's shooting, and it also provided them with some tips on how to stay safe around campus.

Police are still in the process of interviewing the victim. They have not arrested anyone for the shooting yet.
