Slain man was witness in federal criminal case

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A man shot and killed in Louisville over the weekend had survived two previous attempts on his life and had been listed as a witness in a federal murder and racketeering case.

The Courier-Journal reported that 34-year-old Gregory Sawyers was set to testify against Ricky Kelly, who is awaiting trial in U.S. District Court in Louisville. Kelly and Dion Dajuan Neal face charges of murder for hire and racketeering for allegedly killing Lajuante "B.B." Jackson in an effort to protect a drug trafficking organization. They have pleaded not guilty.

Court documents say Sawyers told investigators he saw Kelly shoot Jackson on Aug. 19, 2005.

Louisville police and Jefferson County prosecutors declined to comment on whether Sawyers' death is connected to his status as a witness in the federal case.
