Thieves steal from family's private cemetery

MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (AP) - Members of a Montgomery County family say they can't imagine the motivation of someone who would steal from a cemetery.

Janet Martin says that her son's grave is among those in a small, private family burial ground that can't be seen from the road.

Sheila Martin said she discovered the theft when she went to tend her daughter's grave on Tuesday, which was the anniversary of her death. Among items that had been taken were solar lights lining three of the graves, a horse statue and a bench at a baby's headstone.

Family members filed a police report. They said investigators speculate someone might have discovered the graves while riding an off-road trail.
