SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -

For the past year, three children in Georgetown have lived with their grandparents because both of their parents were deployed to Afghanistan with the U.S. Army.

"As much as they love me, I am their grandparent. So they're so anxious to have mom and dad back," says Morah Shell, the grandmother.

Saturday, 9-year-old Riley and 7-year-old twins, Mackenzie and Caleb were distracted from missing Mom and Dad by getting to attend a cousin's birthday party.

Little did they know, there would be a surprise for them.

Sgt. Bradley Shell wasn't expected home until next month but he showed up to the party. It took some time for his kids to realize that Dad is home.

" My heart was in my throat. I was ready to just run up and grab them. A year is a long time," says Sgt. Shell.

This isn't Shell's first deployment but he says it never gets any easier, "This is my third tour. This is the first time I've deployed since my two younger children were born. It's a lot to process when you finally get to see them," Shell says.

But this family isn't complete yet. Now, they are anxiously waiting together for Mom to come home too.

"I'm sure they will be ecstatic when she gets home too," Shell says.
