Woman rescued from burning home in Franklin County

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - It took the help of four men to rescue a woman who became unconscious after her home caught fire Wednesday afternoon.

A Franklin County sheriff's deputy heard a call about a house fire and ended up rescuing the woman trapped inside.

The fire broke out around 3:00 Wednesday afternoon on Darbywood Road near Frankfort.

“My wife and I were both off work and we happened to look out back and thought we saw snow blowing across with the wind and looked a little closer and realized it was smoke,” said Matthew Arden, who lives next door to the home that caught fire.

By the time Matthew Arden made his way across the lawn, “Flames were coming up out of the windows; the windows had been blown out and there was just smoke billowing everywhere.”

Two construction workers first spotted the flames and called 911 and thankfully, help was right down the road.

“He was on the way to his house a few miles away from where it was. He told dispatch that he was en route to the scene because he was close. Thank God he was,” said Sheriff Pat Melton of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Within minutes, Deputy Montey Chappell arrived at the burning home and jumped into action.

“The police officers were the first ones on the scene and they directed us to help us get her out of the house itself. She was actually wedged up right behind the front door so it looked like she tried to crawl herself to the front door but just couldn’t make it out,” Arden said.

But thankfully the victim was carried to safety by the helping hands of four men she'd never even met.

The victim has been taken to UK Hospital where we're told she's listed in serious condition.

The victim's name has not been released at this time and investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.
