Work on new power turbine about 40 percent done

SMITHLAND, Ky. (AP) - Work on a new power generating turbine at the Smithland Lock and Dam is about 40 percent done and is scheduled to start production in the spring of 2015.

The bulb turbine is one of five that American Municipal Power-Ohio is constructing along the Ohio River. The project will generate 72 megawatts of power and create seven to nine permanent operator jobs upon opening.

American Municipal Power-Ohio spokesman Kent Carson told The Paducah Sun that long-term bonds are being used to pay for the $400 million project and those will be repaid through 79 partners purchasing power from the plant.

The plant has a life expectancy of 60 to 70 years, with energy generated through river current passing through turbines on the river bottom.
