Breast cancer survivor uses creativity to heal

Lexington KY (WKYT)- Friday night hundreds in Lexington will get dressed up for a good cause.

The annual Pink Tie Gala raises money to help find a cure for breast cancer.

One of those in attendance at the gala will be a Lexington woman who is using her creative side to reach out after her diagnosis.

Bobbie Niehaus has always had a creative side and now its helping her during the fight for her life.

"It was early November of last year and I felt a lump in my left breast," said Niehaus.

Bobbie was diagnosed with a fast spreading invasive breast cancer, she opted for a double mastectomy and this past may finished her chemotherapy.

"No one wants to hear the words you have cancer especially at 31-years- old."

At first the news was devastating to a woman who still had so much life to live.

While it was a lot to digest at once, Bobbie chose to keep her head up.

"I was like okay, I have cancer, but it doesn't have me. I had to start being a fighter."

Now at 32 she is still fighting, an avid scrapbooker she knows she still has many more years of photos to fill up the pages or her latest book.

"You don't have to sit around and mope about it, life is going to go on."

Crafting is her way of keeping her mind off cancer.

Bobbie paints bottle cap necklaces with breast cancer images, she started by painting ones with her favorite team the Wildcats. The necklaces have become her signature piece.

With mounting medical bills Bobbie sells them as a way to spread hope to others.

A post on Facebook helped spread the word, she says it was becoming overwhelming because of how many people were willing to support her.

Hearing the word cancer wasn't a death sentence to Bobbie Niehaus.

She doesn't know what the future holds, but for now she is going to continue letting her creative juices flow!

Bobbie credits her self exam for saving her life and says if diagnosed you should try and learn all you can about your diagnosis.

Bobbie sells her bottle cap necklaces for $10.
