Breast cancer survivor finishes long journey

Being diagnosed with breast cancer can often stop a woman in her tracks, but in this Think Pink story one survivor's diagnosis has kept her moving.

Amber Philpott has more on how one Boyle county woman's multiple bouts with breast cancer has spurred her to finish a journey nearly forty years in the making.

When Delores Yocum was 18 she did something she has always regretted.

" I quit school, it was May 1973," said Yocum.

She earned her GED in1984, but in 2010 she set her sights on something bigger in obtaining a college degree.

"I kept saying I'm going to go back."

At 57-years-old Yocum is a student again attending classes at Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Danville.

"I want to go into a program where I can help people, I want to help them find the resources. I want them to know that just because you hear the c-word it doesn't mean it's a death sentence."

Delores knows the c-word, having battled breast cancer now three times.

Her first diagnosis was treated with radiation, the second with chemo where she lost her hair, but it was the last bout that enough was enough.

"This third time I said okay you don't have many more birthdays chick, so its time to really do something and make sure this isn't going to come back again."

Delores had a bi-lateral mastectomy and never looked back.

"You just got to take it slow, take it one day at a time, learn to live with it, own it and keep it moving."

Never stopping, Delores is on track to graduate with her associates degree in medical information technology in December.

It is a road that at times for Delores was long, but one she is nearing an end to.

"If I can do it you can do it, don't let nothing stop you."

Delores says she is so excited to graduate and she just might Moonwalk across the stage to get her diploma.

Delores was recently honored with the Boyle County Impact Award for helping make a difference.
