Lexington Valentine's party to fight breast cancer

Lexington, Ky. (WKYT)- This Friday is a day set aside for love, its when couples celebrate their affection for one another.

Red is the traditional color we think of for Valentine's Day, but this year one group hopes you see pink!

In this month's Talk Pink, WKYT's Amber Philpott has a way you can celebrate Valentine's Day and give back to a good cause all at the same time.

Chocolates are one option for your valentine, but what about fashion!

"We figured this a good way to get people out and do something fun, different and interesting," said Megh Jennings, the lead merchandiser for Gap at Fayette Mall.

The Gap at Fayette Mall has partnered with Soundbar on S. Limestone in Lexington to host a Pink Valentine Party with all of the proceeds going to support Susan G. Komen.

"We have done three of these events including this one within the last six months. We are really trying to push to see how we can help the community," said Jennings.

The night includes a fashion show, silent auction and even a couples costume party.

Gap strives to give back to the community, focusing on women and children.

Past events have helped raise thousands of dollars.

The Pink Valentine Party is also personal, Bobbie Niehaus is a breast cancer survivor and has become a good friend and ambassador for the store's mission.

"She instantly became our poster survivor, she helps us organize most of the silent auction. She's always got a smile on her face, she definitely brings a lot to our store which we love her for," said Zach Erwin, the store manager.

After being diagnosed and beating breast cancer, Bobbie now works tirelessly to raise money to one day help find a cure.

So on a day set aside for love, Gap hopes you will treat your valentine to a night of helping others.

"The take away is that you can have fun and you can support a really great cause that is going towards Komen," said Jennings.
