Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has canceled a scheduled appearance in Lexington.

He was scheduled to speak at an event at the nursing school on the campus of the University of Kentucky on Tuesday morning.

His campaign sent out an e-mail on Monday afternoon, saying he wouldn't appear in Lexington. He'll return to Washington, D.C on Monday night because he reportedly has some important votes to make.

Obama's last visit to Lexington was in August.

The Illinois senator will still make a scheduled appearance at an event in Louisville on Monday night. He'll speak at a rally at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

Voters in West Virginia headed to the polls on Tuesday. Hillary Clinton is widely expected to win that contest, but Obama still has the lead when it comes to the popular vote.

J R in Prestonsburg: if you haven't heard what Obama proposes in foreign policy and any issues he takes a stand on, I would suggest doing a little web search. It's a sad thought that many (Dems) would vote McCain over Obama (if he gets the nod). The country is in a mess, I guess some want to keep it going for another 4 years.

Of all the politicians that have come and gone he is by the far the worst to speak of change and has never said exactly what that change would be, no offence to Keith but I have never heard what he proposes for foriegn policy his lack of knowledge should automaticly disqualify from being a presidental candidate but for some strange reason he is very popular with many. I saw on tv long ago that if the democrats ever gain the oval office they would have to run Southern moderate but they can't seem to put it together. I am not a fan of OHB nor Hillary so my choice is obvious

Eddie in Pikesville-- you're entitled to your opinions, but not your own facts. Obama favors some increase in the payroll tax only on those making more than $97,000 plus annually. Currently, people making 40,000 pay the same amount of payroll tax as those making $100,000 or $1,000,000. Also, while retirement funds are kept in workers' 401K plans, they're not subject to capital gains taxes. This is the VAST majority of investments for the 100 million Americans you're talking about. Obama is referring to cap gains tax increases on the likes of Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, who pay less taxes percentage wise on most of their income, since that's from investment gains, than their secretaries do on their wages. Please check your facts.

Bart in Harrodsburg, we finally agree on something! :)

It would not surprise me in the least to learn that some of Obama's biggest supporters (at the present time and behind the scenes) are Republicans. For the simple reason that they know he cannot win in November. The only way he could possibly beat McCain would be if Hillary was his running mate. And to all the Democrats who have said she should drop out of the race, SHAME ON YOU! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME....

Posted by: Eddie Location: Pikeville on May 14, 2008 at 11:38 PM
Keith from Flemingsburg, you ARE aware that Obama is on record from one of his debates defining the middle class as up to $200,000 a year, right? And as for his cutting taxes on the middle class? His plan would actually RAISE taxes on the middle class because he proposes an increase in the payroll tax. That's right, the average person would get HOSED in his tax plan, not saved. He also proposed increasing the capital gains tax. More than 100 million people own stocks, most of them average people investing in their 401k plan. Almost every single study has shown that when the capital gains tax is increased, revenue to the Treasury Department DECLINES, but when they are decresed, revenue INCREASES. So that means if he increases the capital gains tax, the money going into the governement to pay for all these programs will actually decrease. Obama's economic plan is a nightmare and don't get me started on his foreign policy, we'd all be speaking Farsi or something by the time he's done.

Thank you Osama Bartbama

To Keith: Do you realize that Hillary also has many of these same ideas and views and also said them first. He only says exactly what she says. He can not think for himself on the spot. That is why he would not debate Hillary in an open debate. He is a man that truly scares me!! There is so much about this man that has yet to come out of the closet. It is slowly coming out litttle by little day by day. Things such as his involvement with his minister of 20 years and opps I didn't know he felt that way, his wife only proud to be an American once in her life after receiving a free education to an Ivy League school-that is a slap in the face to all Americans but especially those that served our country and fought for our freedom. If you think that he is what our country needs you are wrong!!!! He lacks the experience to be the president. He has not even completed one term as a senetor! Do you really want a man like that in the White House with the shape our country is in? NO

Posted by: Brandon Location: Middlesboro on May 14, 2008 at 03:05 PM
What a President that can't even visit Kentucky because he knows its a waste of time because Hillary will kill him in the Bluegrass State!

Posted by: Keith Location: Flemingsburg on May 14, 2008 at 01:50 PM
I will definitely be voting for Obama. Mainly I like his foreign policy ideas and his tax plan that is cutting taxes on the middle class and ending Bush's corporate welfare. He is far and away the best candidate I have ever seen.

THANK YOU West Virginia! A lot of voters from other States and there Super D's now have " VOTER REMORSE " having voted for Obama, after the TRUTH and FACTS come out about the Wright Scandel, Ayres, Farrakahn, Black Panthers, and to top it off his Wife's comments to the Press, and his having his picture taken in MUSLIM ATTIRE! He sat 20 years beside a Preacher that was a RACIST and preached Anit-American veiws! Hey,Kentucky and the remaining States who have not voted yet, " It is our American Duty to VOTE this guy down....he clearly is NOT what we need in the Washington.

McCain is the only safe way to go! I wouldn't vote for Obama if he was the only one running! That also goes for Hillary! Neither one of them have the brains or respect it takes to run our country. I can't believe it has come down this! I am so sick of hearing both of their names, I could just scream!

I will not be voting nor will my family be voting for Obama!!!!! I am proud to be an American.....God Bless the USA!!!!

Matt, are you serious-listen to what you just said. A man that will listen to the people-he canceled his apperance in central KY. He will not listen to the people. I have sent numerous e-mails to him and his wife Michelle asking specific questions and he will not even answer one, nor will Ben Chandler for that matter. He would NOT make a good president!!! I can't believe that you would consider voting for the man that does not even show enough respect for the men and women overseas helping to protect our nation as to place his hand over his heart and his wife having said she was only proud to be an American Once in her life? Give me a break did you fall and hit your head or something? You can not be serious about actually voting for this man that sat in the same church for 20 years and did not know the minister was prejudice? Yes he knew because he is also prejudice. His church websit used to have it on there-the whole church felt the same way-including Oprah!!!!!!

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN OBAMA & HILLARY OTHER THAN MALE & FEMALE AND SKIN TONE?? BOTH WANT THE WORKING MAN TO KEEP UP THE IDIOTS THAT WON'T WORK AND GIVE THE COUNTRY TO THOSE SUCH AS BEN LAUDEN AND OTHER RADICALS.--Go MCCAIN, YOU HAVE THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE TO RUN AMERICA.

Posted by: Chris Location: Lexington on May 13, 2008 at 07:39 PM
Matt, whomever you are, please educate yourself on politics. Obviously you know nothing and I bet you are under 25. McCain will carry Kentucky and win the Presidency big, Im thinking 65% . You may vote for him Matt, but the majority of America WILL NOT. McCain a true hero, the next President of the United States of America.

Who cares if he stops listen people if Obama wins the nomination you will see him lose against McCain worse than George McGovern i assure you and i am a conservative and i can not stand McCain its hard for me not to vote Hillary just to send a message and might vote democrat for the first time in my life.McCain is not a conservative and most of us now cares less who wins we have been out of this race since the media elected McCain.

Obama will be the 43rd president! I'm voting for him! WE need a president who will listen to the American people! We don't need Hilary or McCain with their my way or the high way approach we have suffered under yoke of tyranny and that same attitude with the current president! It doesn't make sense to continue to elect politicians of that school of thought!

I am a disenfranchised Michigan voter, who's grandmother and g-grandparents were born in Eastern Kentucky. Obama is making 2 stops in Mi tomorrow. One stop is Grand Rapids which is a Rep. strong hold. After him telling us no re-vote. (Afraid to lose again) You make up your minds like Michigan voter's will. Our votes in the primary were not good enough for the Democratic party in January, which must mean they don't need us in November and we are a swing state the will probably swing Red if Hillary is not the nominee.

DONT COME CRYING, you have nothing to worry about, Bush and company have already destroyed our nation for their own profit. Good luck (edited) you will need it in November

If, God forbid, he gets the presidential election, I don't want to hear anyone of you who thinks that is good for our country and makes the stupiest decision of your lives by voting for him, crying when he DESTROYS our nation and we all become victims of his LIES, because that's what will happen. If you vote for him, I hope you can sleep at night when you see what he brings on our country. I hope you will be able to look others, mostly our soldiers, knowing they are putting their lives at stake everyday for someone that would put that MAN in office over our Country to destroy everything they are fighting for and have been fighting for years, in the face and feel comfortable with what you have brought too our table, and I hope you all get the biggest bite. I am not about too make such a horrible mistake as too vote for the man that don't have our NATION or our beliefs in heart for the good but only too worsen it.

Posted by: Bart Location: Harrodsburg on May 13, 2008 at 01:11 PM
Well, Hillary Fan, his former minister isn't running for president. His wife isn't running for president. Hillary's only experience is damage control after her (edited) husband disgraced himself. Obama has ran a campaign that despite all the odd against him, he has come out on top. This shows that the man has leadership ability. He is the only candidate that has an actual plan. You can read that plan on his website. Hillary had the chance to fix health care, and the health insurance companies shut her down. That was back when she was First Lady. I would vote for Romeo the Dog before I'd vote for McCain! Hillary will not get the nomination. It is too late for that now. She cannot get nominated. On May 20th, Obama will announce his victory. You have to decide if you want John McCain or if you want Barack Obama. At this point, you shouldn't even be thinking about Hillary.

Posted by: JPB Location: KY on May 13, 2008 at 12:54 PM
well, big surprise there...duh! Imagine how "well" we will be treated IF he wins the nomination and then the presidency, knowing that neither KY or WV was for him...same old "you know what", different day....

I suppose he had already been talking to Mongiardo and Chandler. I bet they assured all the supporters they had would certainly back him. Since he had already gotten the super delegate endorsement from them, he didn't need the Kentucky people anymore. I suppose the state senator race is in the bag for either Chandler or Mongiardo. Sorry no vote for either of you here. I would not support anyone they would endorse anymore. They should have waited until our primary. You don't know what you missed Sen. Obama by seeing what this great state had to offer you, other than Chandler or Mongiardo. This old voter is behind Clinton all the way now. This old voter use to be behind the Lt. Gov and Congressman Chandler, but no more. At least we have the First Ammendment FOR NOW anyway.

I beleive he intended to be in D.C. today all along and never intended to actually show up in Lexington. The votes he went to D.C. to cast did not come up at the last minute. All he has to do to get his supporters fired up is SUGGEST that he is coming. All he has to do to avoid his detractors is not show up. And by claiming he HAS to go to D.C. for some "important" votes (I guess he has to be there to say "present".) his supporters don't feel rejected. I'm beginning to think this guy could sell snake oil to Beshear.

Posted by: JC Location: Richmond on May 13, 2008 at 11:59 AM
I guess he doesn't feel we are important. Guess I will just have to vote for Hillary!

Posted by: Hillary Fan Location: Richmond on May 13, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Well Bart you need to stop and think for just a moment. Why has his wife stated that she has only been proud to be an American once in her life? Why does he just now realize that the minister of 20 years feels the way he does and wants nothing to do with him? Did you know that the church as a whole held these same beliefs? It was once posted on their website (less than a year ago). We do not know who the real Barack Obama is and it will eventually come out later down the road. I am not basing my decisions on lies and myths but you need to know the facts. He also has served less than one term in office-he does not have the experience to run our country. And as far as those of you who say well give him the benefit of the doubt about saying he was going to come-he is running with his tail tucked between his legs!!!!

Posted by: c Location: fkt on May 13, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Well, he can just stay away from KY as far as I'm concerned. To those who think Obama is not a muslin, do you know that once a muslin always a muslin or they kill you! Muslins are killing Christian in other countries & have been for years! He cannot denounce being a muslin. Study your religions of today & see the truth! You're the blind idiots if you think he's not a muslin. Furthermore, he does have dual citizenship with Kenya & the USA, so he shouldn't even be allowed to run for the highest office in this country! He's not willing to become a full time US citizen so he has NO RIGHT to be president! He WILL DESTROY THIS COUNTRY IF HE BECOMES PRESIDENT! There's no way in he** I'll ever vote for him! And I don't care if he's pink with purple dots, it's not about race, it's about him truly being an American and standing for OUR vaules! He wants change alright..change this country to a muslin state!

To Melissa in Lexington (and anyone else who shares that same view): you said "I was voting for Hillary, but now that Obama is clearly the front runner he will get my vote!" I say ... "why?" I'm not saying that I agree, or disagree, with either candidate; and I'm not trying to be sarcastic here...I'm asking you to help me understand because what you said makes no good sense to me at all. IF Obama has given you good reason to change your views & you truly no longer believe Clinton is the best person for the job then that's great & I completely understand why you would change who you support. BUT...to change your vote based solely on which candidate appears to be the frontrunner, that seems crazy to me. I've always believed our way of electing the President of the U.S. is completely crazy...popular vote should win, not electoral. If that were the case, would you still want to change your vote based on who's ahead in the polls?

Posted by: Bart Location: Harrodsburg on May 13, 2008 at 09:20 AM
A significant number of Kentuckians believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim who refuses to salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance. Others believe that Obama will hand out slave reparations (as if the President could do that on his own). Some say that he was sworn in on Koran. FALSE! They emphasize that Obama's middle name is Hussein. I didn't choose my middle name and probably none of you did either. If he had changed his middle name, then that would have been an even bigger scandal. The ole "trying to hide something" gimmick. It has been shown time and time again that Obama is not a Muslim nor has he ever been a Muslim. He never attended a Muslim school. He leads the pledge of allegiance in the Senate and has said that he is not for slave reparations. The last one was during the "YouTube debate." I mean, if you don't want to vote for Obama, then that's fine. But don't base your decision on lies and myths.

Posted by: THANKFUL on May 13, 2008 at 09:19 AM
I for one will not under no circumstance vote for Obama, for just one reason and than is because I don't TRUST him, America is in a crisis and if we elect him, we are only going to be in a worse shape than we are now. We need someone with back bone and will do what they promise, I wish that if the president didn't come through with what they said they would during their campaining, that they would automatically get discharged as president, because we don't need anymore LIARS as presidents or at all in any authority position. America it is time for a change, it is time for us to stand for, and be what we were once upon a time. We are spiraling down hill quickly, lets put on the breaks and do what is right again.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 13, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Obama is playing the race card and doing it well. He's won an astounding 90% of the black vote. The talk of change sounds wonderful when times are bleak, but does he have the right stuff to create changes? probably not. His experience lacks woefully.

Yeah you go OBAMA all the way home!!!! Kentucky does not want you!!! You know it is fine that you do not even waste your time on the people of Ky. That just goes to prove how you really feel about the people of Ky. You have not even waited for all the people of the US to vote and those in the state of Michigan and Florida to be counted and you are already going and visiting other states that you have been to and they have already voted!!!! That is just classic. Very typical of what we can expect from you if you were to be elected.

Posted by: KJ Location: Berea on May 12, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Well ghettochip why will you be voting for Obama? Is it his long standing politician career (of one term), is it the way he shows such love for our country (by not saluting the flag during the pledge), is it his minister of 20 years (by the way he now does not want anything to do with him because he didn't know how he felt after hearing the same sermon for 20 years), is it the fact of his wife being proud to be an American ONE time in her life (by the way she received a free education to an Ivy League school), or is it how he holds such close relations with other countries (his dual citizenship with Kenya and the US)? Which one of these fine quealities makes you think he would be such a great President?

Posted by: Matt Location: Lexington on May 12, 2008 at 08:45 PM
Well scratch that.

Posted by: Steve Location: Lexington on May 12, 2008 at 06:41 PM
I wonder why he cancelled...could it be that the Herald Leader and WKYT both reported today that he doesn't have a chance of winning KY, so he figures he'll put his money and resources into a state he has a chance in. Sometimes polling can hurt you...KY was "supposed" to be important this year, but again it is not.

Posted by: Eddie Location: Pike on May 12, 2008 at 06:36 PM
Matt and Ghettochip, what is there to applaud? He's not coming to Lexington, and he will show up in Louisville? Not being racist or anything, but do you think the opportunity to have friendly and supportative video and picture ops in THE predominantly African American city in the state played any part in his decision? He's missed a huge amount of votes over the past year, what is so important that he now has to be in DC? He's been a Senator for right at about 3 years now and has passed ONE bill, and missed many votes, or just voted "Present" without casting a "Yea" or "Nay" vote in those 3 years. He's an empty suit with no experience to speak of. I'll take substance over style any day of the week, go McCain! Heck, Beshear was a smooth talker, I don't hear or see many people who are too fond of the person they voted for now, and I suspect an Obama administration would be the same way.

I may not vote for him in November, but I applaud his commitment to a promise he made candidly to come and visit the Bluegrass. Even though he has little chance of winning here, he comes here to hear our problems anyways. I am willing to give him the benefit of a doubt. Barack would be better than Hillary McBush any day. Posted by: Me Location: central ky on May 12, 2008 at 04:28 PM
Guess what Obama does not want you in this state. As far as Mongiardo endorsing him, hope he along with Ben Chandler had fun in office while they did because I will not vote for them again. Obama lacks the experience to be the next president of the US. He also does not respect the country enough to even place his hand over his heart while the pledge is being said.

Posted by: Ghetto Boy Location: Richmond on May 12, 2008 at 02:50 PM
Why does this man want to come to KY? Also as far as Lieutenant Governor Dan Mongiardo endorsing the man-the same goes for him that went for Ben Chandler-Pack your bags you will never get elected in this state again. Why not wait and see how the people of KY feel before doing something like that? The state has not voted. I know many of my friends and family are strongly against Obama (and no it has nothing to do with race). But I also know we will not be voting for Chandler nor Mongiardo ever again. Hope you had fun what time you were in office.

We may not be perfect here in the USA, but we sure are doing allot better than most countries. Obama does not have enough Pride to be my President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pick a Side and stand by it Obama. It’s easy to tell the people what they want to hear if you keep changing your story!! McCain is not the answer either. Hillary is insane. Does she know what BUDGET MEANS??? How can she run a country when she broke her campaign, and keeps spending!! People we are picking the less of the three evils here.
