LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler is calling for troop withdrawals from Iraq starting right away. But he says any policy change is unlikely until a new president takes office.
The central Kentucky Democrat says a troop surge has improved
conditions in Iraq, and says the Iraqi government should stand on its own.
Chandler made the comments to the Lexington Herald-Leader after
his first trip through Iraq over the weekend. He says he's increasingly concerned with the mounting cost of the U.S. occupation and reconstruction of Iraq.
Chandler says the U.S. needs to leave the Iraqis with as stable a situation as possible, but says it's time to start withdrawing troops.
Jon Larson is Chandler's Republican opponent in the upcoming 6th
District election. He is urging more patience with the Iraqi government and says that Chandler's suggestion sounds "extremely risky."

I can sympathize with Rep. Chandler's feelings that we need to withdraw from Iraq, but being a veteran of the conflict, but we need not be so fast about it. We need to be slow and deliberate about it. There is not much information in this article, but I know the defeatist attitude of those in Washington who Rep. Chandler seems to like to imitate, so I assume that he is a proponent of whole sale withdrawal. The gains our forces have made are substantial, but he whole situation is fragile in Iraq. I just don't want to see some much sacrifice go for naught.
