LOUISVILLE, KY -- U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., called for unity among Kentucky Republicans in the lead up to the 2010 elections at the Lincoln Day Dinner last night in Louisville, reports The Louisville Courier-Journal in its Saturday edition.

“We can’t have internal strife between members of the same party if we’re going to be successful,” Bunning said.

He asked for the support for his re-election bid from the some 250 people who attended the event at the Galt House.

Bunning is seeking a third term in the Senate, but may face a challenge in the GOP primary.

Some leaders of the national party, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, believe Bunning is vulnerable next year and have questioned whether he will run.

McConnell didn’t attend last night’s function but Brad Cummings, the Jefferson County Republican Party chairman, read a letter from the senator that criticized Democrats for squabbling among themselves and commended Republicans for their 2008 election victories in Kentucky.

“Now is a good time to be a Republican in Kentucky,” he said in the letter.

State Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, also spoke at the dinner, saying it is imperative that Republicans hold on to the commonwealth’s two Senate seats, reports The Louisville Courier-Journal.
