A new effort has been launched to get Kentucky's schools to go green.

House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins was joined by students, teachers, and other school officials in the State Capitol Rotunda Thursday morning, as he announced the Kentucky Green Schools Initiative.

It's a legislative plan that's designed to make the state's schools more energy efficient, which Adkins says will also save schools money in the long run.

Adkins says the goal is to save 25 percent energy at every school in Kentucky.

He also says students will play a big role.

"The kids who are going to these schools and are a part of that energy audit team, to really be able to take home and educate their parents about how important it is to save energy in the future," Rep. Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook said.

Adkins says Rosa Parks Elementary School in Lexington has saved 47 percent on its energy bill over the last year, thanks to green initiatives.
