WASHINGTON (AP) - The Associated Press has learned that the government will require new cars and trucks to achieve an average fuel economy of 31.6 miles per gallon by 2015.

Transportation Department Secretary Mary Peters plans to make the announcement Tuesday, which is Earth Day. A new energy law requires the fleet wide average of new cars and trucks to meet 35 mpg by 2020.

A U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement said new cars and trucks will need to meet a fleet wide average of 31.6 mpg by 2015.
