Alex Meade has been a bike commuter in Lexington for 17-years. He makes the 3.8-mile trip from his home off Richmond Road to Lexmark every day...rain or shine. About the only thing that keeps him from biking to work is ice. His bike route to work is not the most direct. If he can manage it, he stays off of main roads that heavy with morning rush hour traffic. Instead Alex uses neighborhood streets that are safer for cyclists. Alex also packs his work clothes in a side bag on the bike, and Lexmark has showers if he needs them after a sweaty ride. He suggests beginning bike commuters get out a map, and carefully plan the route they are going to take. He makes the nearly four mile trip in 20-minutes.
Kristan Lenning is also a veteran, bike commuter. The associate professor at BCTS enjoys being outside, and she says the bike is refreshing after a long day in the classroom. Kristan has attached a loud horn to her bike so that drivers can hear her if she needs to warn them. Her savings come in parking. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a campus parking pass, Kristan has free bike parking near the building she works in.
We don't know how many people in Lexington bike to work, but with rising gas prices and warmer weather, you're likely to see more people taking two wheels to work instead of four.
