For many years, Wal-Mart associates have worked diligently to serve millions of customers that visit Wal-Mart stores each week. Recently, many employees of the world’s largest retailer have also been taking part in an effort that goes above and beyond the normal call of duty.

Associates are voluntarily participating in Wal-Mart’s Personal Sustainability Project (PSP), which encourages associates to integrate a small change into their lives to benefit their own health and well-being, as well as the environment. PSP’s can include anything from developing healthier eating habits to helping clean up parks and recreation areas in local communities.

Since the onset of the program in 2007, nearly 20,000 associates have quit smoking, more than 3 million pounds of plastic have been recycled, and employees have collectively lost more than 184,000 pounds from eating healthier and exercising regularly.

In Kentucky, Wal-Mart associates have taken full advantage of the PSP opportunity. Employees of the Williamsburg store invited students from Whitley County North Elementary School to visit Wal-Mart and learn about products that could help save the environment.

Assistant Manager Steven Centers talked to the group about the PSP initiative, as well as the advantages of recycling and cleaning up communities. In addition to environmental tips, students received a sustainable gift and teachers were given a reusable shopping tote.
