Bluegrass Pride is holding their annual rain barrel competition fundraiser. And your help is needed in cleaning the groundwater supply as well as sprucing up a local park. Here's more in this Project Green Report.
A small yard project can make a big difference in the movement for cleaner water. Just by digging a shallow depression and filling it with native plants you will create a rain garden which will could capture rain water from your house.
"If it doesn't soak into the ground the water will then runoff of your property and pick up pollutants like pet waste or extra lawn chemicals and then it goes into the street and storm drains and directly into streams," says Bluegrass Pride Executive Director Amy Sohner.
If you've been out and about you may have seen a painted rain barrel.
"Bluegrass Pride, for your eighth year, is having our artists to decorate rain barrels and we display them through out central KY so that people can be drawn to them and then learn about water quality," says Sohner.
You can vote on the one that's your favorite at www.bgpride.org. Later the rain barrels will be auctioned off and the proceeds benefit the Bluegrass Pride education program.
The Great American Cleanup event will be held this weekend at Shillito Park.
"There's some litter that needs to be removed. It's prone to some storm water drainage issues so that's why we'll be removing some debris. It's also one of the largest parks in Lexington and gets a lot of use by a lot of people so it's a very visible park and it's a good opportunity for all of Lexington to come out and do something productive," says LFUCG Division of Environmental Policy Spokesman Mark York.
To volunteer meet the group out at Shillito Park this Saturday, May 21st from 9 am to noon. For more information go to http://shillitopark.eventbrite.com/
