Wal-Mart Supports Local Environmental Efforts
World’s Largest Retailer Sponsors Fayette County Public School’s WasteBuster Program

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Fayette County Public School system’s WasteBuster initiative received a helpful boost from Wal-Mart when the company donated more than $16,000 for cardboard only recycle bins in January. The bins were given to 15 elementary and middle schools in the Fayette County area. Since then, the bins have collected several tons of recyclable material.

The WasteBuster program is a joint initiative with Bluegrass PRIDE designed to increase recycling in Fayette County schools, apartments and businesses. Fayette County Public Schools entered the initiative in the fall of 2006, and over a two-year period has contributed over 400 tons of recycled materials. In addition, they reported an estimated savings of $50,000 per year as a result of the WasteBuster Program at their annual recognition program.

While Wal-Mart is best known for being a global market leader, they maintain a local approach to their philanthropic efforts.

“We know we can make the greatest impact on our communities by supporting causes that are important to our customers right in their own neighborhoods,” said Jason Wetzel, a senior public affairs manager for Wal-Mart.

At Wal-Mart, being an efficient, profitable business and being a good steward of the environment are goals that can work together. In October 2005, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott committed to three large sustainability goals: to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste, and to sell products that sustain resources and the environment.
