Spurrier says team in tryout mode

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says
the 16th-ranked Gamecocks are in "tryout mode" as he continues
looking for players who can build the program into a Southeastern
Conference contender.
Spurrier previously announced that freshman Chris Smelley would
start at quarterback for Blake Mitchell against Mississippi State
on Saturday.
The Gamecocks are scheduled to play Kentucky's Wildcats on
October fourth.
Spurrier also says that receiver Dion Lecorn and left guard
Seaver Brown will make their first starts this week.
In addition, linebacker Marvin Sapp will get the call to replace
injured star Jasper Brinkley.
The school says Brinkley will have surgery Wednesday to fix his
right knee.
The senior was injured in last week's 28-16 defeat at LSU.
