EKU men picked to finish 2nd in OVC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team was picked to finish second out of 11 teams in the 2007-08 preseason Ohio Valley Conference poll conducted by a vote of OVC head men’s basketball coaches and sports information directors. Junior forward Mike Rose and sophomore guard Adam Leonard were named to the preseason all-conference team.

Eastern Kentucky returns eight players and three starters from last season’s OVC Tournament championship squad. The Colonels were second in the regular season and squared off against No. 1 seed North Carolina in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

Rose, a native of Naperville, Ill., averaged a team-best 15.1 points per game last season while hitting 88 three-pointers and notching 52 steals. No player in the OVC hit more trifectas than Leonard (104), as he earned OVC Co-Freshman of the Year honors a season ago. The native of Kansas City, Mo., netted 3.2 three-pointers per game last year which ranked 20th nationally. The team also has senior forward/center Darnell Dialls back. Dialls ranked third in the OVC in field goal percentage (56.4) in 2006-07 and topped off the year with a season-high 17 points versus North Carolina.

Defending regular season champ Austin Peay was named the preseason favorite after garnering 19 of the 22 possible first-place votes. Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech also registered some first-place nods. Austin Peay junior forward Drake Reed came away with preseason Player of the Year accolades.

The Colonels open the 2007-08 schedule on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a home game against West Virginia Wesleyan. Eastern Kentucky compiled a 21-12 record in 2006-07 while tying a program record with 13 conference victories.
