12 UK women, four men advance out of NCAA Regionals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Kentucky track and field teams had another successful East Regional under the direction of second-year head coach Edrick Floreal, as Kentucky advanced 12 women and four men to the 2014 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks.

The Wildcats had three women in three different events who were crowned 2014 East Regional Champions this weekend, with Sha'Keela Saunders winning the women’s long jump with a school-record jump of 21.75/6.43m, Kendra Harrison taking the crown in the 400 meter hurdles (55.90) and Dezera Bryant winning the 200 meter dash in 11.21.

Kentucky will also send five field athletes to the 2014 NCAA Championships, with three qualifiers in the javelin (Saunders, Andrew Adams, Raymond Dykstra, Rebecca Famurewa and Kenyattia Hackworth). In addition to Saunders winning the East Regional crown on Thursday night, Adams had a stellar regional in Jacksonville as well, finishing third in the men’s discus.

UK sent 10 athletes in 11 events to the 2013 NCAA Track and Field Championships a year ago, as the Wildcats will send four more athletes (14) and compete in four more events (15) as well.

The 2014 NCAA Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore., from June 11-14. The ESPN Family of Networks with ESPN3 and ESPNU will combine to televise the event online and on television. The championships will also be available on the WatchESPN app.
