RICHMOND, Ky. – Phil Hendrickson, a member of the Eastern Kentucky University men’s golf team, has won the 2007 Kentucky Golf Association’s Player of the Year Award, the organization recently announced. The award is given to the individual amassing the most points based on performance in various state and national events.
Hendrickson had a tremendous summer, highlighted by victories at the 2007 AT&T Kentucky Amateur Championship at Big Spring Country Club in June and the 2007 Fifth Third Bank/Callaway Golf Kentucky Open Championship at c in August. He became only the third individual to win both of these prestigious titles in the same year, joining former PGA Tour star Jodie Mudd and current PGA Tour star John Holmes in accomplishing the feat.
In addition to the aforementioned victories, the Danville, Ky., native also qualified for the 2007 United States Amateur Championship at Olympic Golf Club in San Francisco, and advanced to the round of match play.
Hendrickson was officially honored at the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame ceremony at Triple Crown Country Club in Union, Ky., on Saturday (December 8).
The senior began his final collegiate season for EKU with four top three finishes in five events this fall. Hendrickson finished first at the Colonel Classic and second at the Morehead State Fall Kickoff Classic and the Bowling Green State John Piper Intercollegiate. He tied for third at the Xavier Invitational.
In 15 rounds of play during the fall, Hendrickson posted a 68.9 stroke average and played 12 rounds at par or under.
Hendrickson is ranked fourth in the nation in the Golfstat Cup Standings. He is ranked second in the nation in par four scoring (3.90) and is fourth in par five scoring (4.46). The Golfstat Cup Standings include players from all NCAA Divisions, NAIA players and junior college players.
The Colonels won three tournaments this fall and placed second in another. Golfstat.com has Eastern ranked 62nd in NCAA Division I golf. As a team the Colonels lead the nation in par five scoring (4.60) and rank second in par four scoring (4.02).
EKU will open its spring schedule on February 25 when they participate in the Argonaut Invitational in Pensacola, Fla.
