UK basketball fans already know a lot about Brandon Knight. He was a star on UK's Final Four team last season, and he was a top ten pick in the NBA Draft.
Now, Knight's mother, Tonya, is sharing the rest of his story in a new book, called "Diary of a Basketball Mom."
The book is a labor of love that started more than ten years ago in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"It's been very exciting," Tonya Knight said. "Who would've thought an 8-year-old kid going out to rec league ball, where they had an iron-on patch for his t-shirt, would turn into him finally going to the NBA. You just never think about that until maybe high school or so, and then you start saying 'This may be a reality.'"
It's a reality she documented every step of the way.
"I'm a writer," Tonya Knight said. "I take little notes and I write a journal and at the end of Brandon's career when he got drafted, I'm sitting there with all these notes and thinking 'What should I do with the notes?'
And then I thought 'Write a book!'"
So she wrote a book, but failed to mention it to her only son.
"When I heard that she might be writing a book I was like 'Hold on,'" Brandon Knight said. "She didn't tell me about it. She did it on her own. I heard it through the grapevine. So I was like 'Oh my goodness. What is my mom cooking up now!' So I called my dad and said 'Do you know what your wife is doing? She's writing a book.' He said 'I know.' I said, 'None of you decided to tell me that the book was about me?'"
The book offers a glimpse inside the mind of a champion on the court and in the classroom. A Gatorade National High School Athlete of the Year and straight-A student who hates to lose, Brandon Knight says that's something he has in common with UK Coach John Calipari.
"He's the same person I am," Brandon Knight said. "He's straightforward. He tells you exactly what it is and how it is. He doesn't sugarcoat it. He tells you what you need to do to get better."
The book also documents the Big Blue Nation's fan frenzy that the Knights also experienced during Brandon's one season at Kentucky.
"I was just not prepared for the fans," Brandon Knight said. "I don't think anybody could prepare themselves for Kentucky fans. UK fans are crazy but they're fun! I have met so many friends since I've been here, people that I hang out with. It's been just awesome."
Brandon Knight was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in June.
With the NBA season currently on hold, Knight says he's working on finishing his degree at UK.
He's currently taking online classes, but he says he could end up back in the classroom next semester, if the NBA season is canceled.
