Lexington, KY (January 11, 2008) – Wotan, a three-year-old Dynaformer colt sold as part of the compete dispersal of the late Cynthia Phipps’ estate, brought $380,000 to top Friday’s session of Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale.
Sold as a racing prospect and purchased by George Krikorian, Wotan is out of the Mr. Prospector mare Rhineland, and from the family of such graded stakes winners as Saarland, Versailles Treaty and General Assembly. He recorded a second- and third-place finish in two starts last year for earnings of $16,900. Claiborne Farm acted as agent for the Phipps dispersal.
Keeneland sold 239 horses on Friday for $3,766,400, down 14.2 percent form last year’s gross of $4,390,100. The average of $15,759 was down 20.7 percent from $19,865 reported in 2007, while the media dipped 15 percent from $10,000 to $8,500.
Through five sessions, Keeneland has sold a total of 1,145 horses for gross receipts of $66,678,700, up 2 percent over the comparable period in 2007 when 1,201 horses brought $65,385,600. The average of $58,235 increased 7 percent over the $54,443 recorded last year, while the median of $24,000 was down 4 percent from $25,000 in 2007.
“The day went about as anticipated,” said Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. “The Phipps horse (Wotan) sold exceptionally well. If buyers feel that a horse has some quality then there is plenty of money there for it.”
Two three-year-old fillies sold as racing or broodmare prospects brought the day’s second- and third-highest prices.
Argentina Bloodstock went to $115,000 to acquire the unraced Danehill Dancer filly Whos Mindin Who (Ire) from the consignment of Burleson Farms LLC, agent. Out of the Lyphard mare Pharapache, Whos Mindin Who is from the family of stakes winners Cliquot and Stockholder.
The unraced Silver Deputy filly Hulotte commanded a bid of $90,000 from Ken and Sarah Ramsey. Hulotte is out of the Kris S. mare Krisada, winner of the La Prevoyante (G2) and a half-sister to stakes winner Conte di Savoya. She was consigned by Windfields Farm, agent.
The January sale continues through Sunday. Sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. daily.
