UK set to announce Phillips as Brooks' successor

UK has called a 4 p.m. news conference for Friday afternoon, where it is expected Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart and UK President Lee Todd will make two major announcements.

Sources tell 27 SportsFirst that UK football coach Rich Brooks is expected to receive a contract extension. Brooks has led the Wildcats to back-to-back Music City Bowl wins.

There is no word on the length of the contract extension.

Barnhart and Todd also are expected to announce offensive coordinator Joker Phillips as Brooks’ successor. Phillips was promoted from wide receivers coach after Ron Hudson was fired in 2004.

Sources say the plan was initiated after UK was contacted by several schools expressing an interest in Phillips. Oklahoma received permission to interview Phillips about becoming its offensive coordinator.

Brooks was part of a similar plan while he was at Oregon, where Mike Belotti was named his successor. Belotti is still the head coach of the Ducks and his team has consistently been among the nation’s best.
