UK's Carroll picks up second national award

DALLAS -- Senior right-fielder Sawyer Carroll has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Carroll tallied one of the more prolific offensive weeks in the history of the UK baseball program, helping the No. 9 Wildcats to a 6-0 week, improving to a 9-0 overall record. Carroll batted .667 (14-for-21) during the week, with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and 17 RBI during UK’s routs of Oakland and Butler. Carroll has homered in four consecutive games, a feat believed to be the first of its kind in school history.

Monday, Carroll collected his first career Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honor, as well as being tabbed the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week.

On the season, Carroll leads the team and the SEC in nearly every offensive category, ranking as the league leader in 8-of-14 offensive categories. Carroll leads the league in average (.600), slugging (1.333), on-base percentage (.690), hits (18), RBI (23), home runs (5), total bases (40), and walks (10). Carroll also ranks second in the league in runs scored, one behind the leader, UK centerfielder Collin Cowgill (18).

A year ago, Carroll led the league during the regular season in doubles (23) with a gap approach, needing 29 games to launch his first homer of his career. After a strong offseason in the weight room, Carroll has already surpassed his three homers in 2007, emerging as one of the SEC’s top power bats.

During the preseason, Carroll, an 18th round pick in 2007 by the Washington Nationals, was named to the Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Watch List, joining UK teammates Collin Cowgill and Scott Green on the prestigious listing of the best players in the nation.

Kentucky (9-0) returns to action with a pivotal non-conference stretch beginning with Evansville on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
