RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University head football coach Dean Hood recently finalized the coaching staff for the 2008 season. The Colonels have added Mike Springston as offensive coordinator, Tony Hatmaker as defensive backs coach, and Carson Jeffers as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.
Springston’s résumé includes six years as an NCAA Division II head football coach and four years as a high school head coach. He was the head coach and athletics director at West Virginia Tech from 1999-03 before taking over as head coach at the University of Charleston (W.Va.) for a year. Most recently, Springston served three years as a special education teacher at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. There, he volunteered his time with the football team for two years. Springston earned his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia Tech in 1982.
“Mike and I worked together in the early 1990s at Glenville State College under Rich Rodriguez,” Hood said. “Mike brings a very creative and innovative offensive system that is hard to stop. More importantly than that, he is a good teacher who cares about kids.”
Hatmaker brings more than 10 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Colonel staff. From 2005-06, he served as the assistant head football coach at Southeastern Louisiana. Hatmaker also spent six years on the staff at Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University. He was the defensive coordinator for five of those seasons and helped the Bearcats earn their first winning record in 10 seasons in 2001. The Kentucky native began his coaching career in 1992 at Union (Ky.) College after playing four years as an outside linebacker for the Bulldogs.
“Tony is a tireless worker who pays attention to detail and coaches with a lot of energy and passion,” Hood said. “We are excited about him being a part of our staff.”
Jeffers has worked at five colleges throughout the South before arriving at EKU. In 2007, Jeffers was the co-offensive coordinator at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, Miss. He was also the offensive coordinator at the University of Charleston (W.Va.) (2003), where he worked with Springston, and Cumberland University (1998). For four years, Jeffers was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of the South. He began his collegiate coaching career in 1995 at his alma mater, Concord College.
“Carson came very highly recommended by a variety of people who have seen him coach several positions,” Hood said. “He has been on both sides of the ball as well as special teams. Carson will be a great addition to our staff.”
Also, six coaches from last year’s staff will be back in maroon this fall. Donn Landholm will serve as the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, John Revere will coach the running backs, Shawn Clark will remain with the offensive line, Jake Johnson will continue to coach the defensive line, Ben Hodges will work with the wide receivers and Klay Koester will serve as an offensive assistant.
Football begins its spring practice on March 31. The annual spring game is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
