Sierra Sunset wins the Rebel

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Sierra Sunset won the $300,000 Rebel
Stakes at Oaklawn Park by three lengths Saturday, holding King's
Silver Son at bay down the stretch in the 48th running of the
Kentucky Derby prep.
With a crowd of 29,961 enjoying a cool spring day, Sierra Sunset
broke second and chased down Sacred Journey, who faded badly on the
final turn and finished last.
Pre-race favorite Z Fortune, off at 4-5, never threatened and
finished a disappointing fifth. Trainer Steve Asmussen's was
bidding for back-to-back wins in the Rebel after Horse of the Year
Curlin won the race last year.
Sierra Sunset, trained by Jeff Bonde and ridden by Christopher
Emigh, finished in 1:43.88 and paid $10.40, $4.80 and $3.80. The
late-charging King's Silver Sun returned $11.00 and $5.40, and
Isabull paid $8 to show.
Denis of Cork won Oaklawn's first Derby prep - the Southwest
Stakes - but was pulled from the Rebel early in the week leading up
to the race. The Arkansas Derby, Oaklawn's final Kentucky Derby
prep, is April 12.
