Kentucky State hires Guy Morriss

Kentucky State University head football coach Fred T. Farrier has announced three (3) additions to the Thorobred coaching staff for the 2008 football season. The new coaches are Guy Morriss, Garry Fisher and Kenyatta McCoy.

Guy Morriss will join the Thorobred staff as offensive line coach. Coach Morriss is the former head football coach at the University of Kentucky (2001-2002) and Baylor University (2003-2007). Coach Morriss brings 19 years of coaching experience along with 15 years of NFL playing experience with him to the Thorobred coaching staff. As an NFL player, his teams participated in the playoffs on 6 different occasions and made 2 trips to the Super Bowl (1980, 1885). As a coach, he has coached for 2 different NFL teams (New England, Arizona) and has been a BCS head coach for 7 years in the SEC and Big 12 conferences. Coach Morriss is a graduate of Texas Christian University (TCU) where he was a 2-time all-Southwest Conference offensive lineman during his collegiate playing career.

Garry Fisher joins the coaching staff as the linebackers coach and will also be responsible for strength and conditioning. Coach Fisher comes to Kentucky State from Shenandoah University where he served as defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator for 2 seasons. Coach Fisher has also coached at the University of Utah and Bowling Green State University, under current University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer, and Heidelberg College. Coach Fisher is a graduate of Bowling Green State University where he was also a collegiate student-athlete. Coach Fisher also holds a master’s degree from the University of Utah in Exercise and Sport Science.

Kenyatta McCoy joins the coaching staff as the defensive backs coach. Coach McCoy comes to Kentucky State from Murray State University where he served as cornerbacks coach in 2007. Prior to his stint at Murray State, coach McCoy coached at Lincoln University for 2 seasons and was a high school coach in Tennessee prior to that. Coach McCoy holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and is close to completing a master’s program at the University of Memphis.

“These coaches are a great addition to my coaching staff. As I look to continue to build this program, I believe these men have proven track records and will add significantly to what we do as a program at Kentucky State. To have the ability to bring Guy Morriss back to the Bluegrass and to Kentucky State University, with his knowledge and expertise, is a once in a career opportunity for me that I believe will have a positive impact for our entire university and I cannot wait to add his insight into our decision making process. This will be the first time in the history of the SIAC that a former BCS head coach has worked in our conference and I know he will help make us a better team and program,” stated head football coach Fred T. Farrier.

The coaching staff is almost complete. Head football coach Fred T. Farrier hopes to add another full-time offensive assistant prior to the start of spring football practice and 2 interns for the fall season. Kentucky State opens spring football practice on April 7th and will conclude spring drills with the annual Green and Gold Game on April 26th at 1 p.m. in Alumni Stadium on the campus of Kentucky State University. All spring practices and the spring game are open to the public and free of charge.

Kentucky State will be entering the fourth season with Fred T. Farrier as head football coach. The Thorobreds enjoyed consecutive winning seasons in his first two seasons as head coach and his win total of 13 in his first two seasons as head coach is the most wins of any head coach in school history during their first two years as head coach. The 2007 season was highlighted by 5 first-team All-SIAC selections, 3 second-team All-SIAC selections, 2 All-SIAC academic selections, a triple-overtime homecoming win against Miles College and a win against Benedict College on ESPNU. Kentucky State opens the 2008 season on August 30th against Lane College in Frankfort, Kentucky.
