EKU men capture OVC All-Sports trophy

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that Eastern Kentucky University claimed the 2007-08 Men’s All-Sports Trophy, its fifth consecutive trophy and 15th overall. Meanwhile, the Colonel women placed sixth among the league’s 11 schools. The All-Sports Trophies, symbols of overall athletic excellence in OVC-sponsored championships, will be presented at the league’s annual Honors Luncheon on May 30 in Nashville, Tenn.

Eastern Kentucky continued its dominance on the men’s side of the competition, as the 15 all-time wins are the most among league schools. The Colonels achieved the feat with a first place OVC finish in half of their men’s sports – cross country, football, indoor track and golf. Tennis and outdoor track also finished third in the final OVC standings. Eastern Illinois, which won three straight titles from 2001-03 was the runner-up, followed closely by Samford, Jacksonville State and Austin Peay.

Samford, which won its first Women’s All-Sports Trophy in 2003-04, claimed its second straight award this season. The Bulldogs won a tight race where the top three teams were separated by only 4.5 points. The Eastern Kentucky women, who claimed the 2007 OVC cross country title, finished 17 points behind Samford. Southeast Missouri and Eastern Kentucky have won the most Women’s All-Sports Trophies, with each university owning seven titles.

The Men’s All-Sports Trophy has been awarded every year since 1962-63 while the women’s trophy was first awarded in 1980-81.
