WILMORE, KY—Asbury College is pleased to announce Bart Flener as the College’s head women’s basketball coach.
Flener has 14 years of experience coaching high school boys’ basketball with a record of 251-151. He previously coached boys’ basketball at West Jessamine High School in Nicholasville from 2004 to 2006, leading the Colts to two district championships in 2005 and 2006 and a regional final four in 2005.
He coached at Lexington Catholic High School from 2002-04, accumulating two district championships, a regional runner-up and a No. 7 national ranking. From 1995-2002, Flener turned around the Glasgow Scotties from a 9-45 record in the two previous seasons to a 137-65 record over the next seven. The Scotties took home the 2001 All ‘A’ Kentucky State Championship, along with two regional championships and numerous district titles.
In 2007-08, Flener served as assistant men’s basketball coach and interim women’s basketball coach at Asbury College. He was the assistant coach for women’s basketball at Georgia College and State University from 1990 to 1992.
“We’re thrilled to have Bart join our team. He did an excellent job as the interim coach and we expect more great things to come,” said Gary Kempf, Asbury College athletic director. “In the short time he was with us last year, he built relationships in the community and gained the confidence of our women’s basketball team. His coaching skills and experience will enhance our basketball program and challenge our student-athletes.”
“I am looking forward to the chance to build a program and see young women come to Asbury College and develop spiritually, academically and athletically,” Flener said.
Flener received his Rank I in administration from Western Kentucky University, M.Ed. from Georgia College and State University and B.A. from the University of Kentucky. He is currently the district instructional coordinator and assistant principal at the Jessamine Career and Technology Center in the Jessamine County School System and coordinates numerous youth basketball camps.
Flener and his wife, Candace, live in Wilmore with their three children, Zach, Embrey and Avery.
Flener begins as the head coach for the 2008-09 season.
