LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Organizers planning a major community
event in connection with September's Ryder Cup international golf
competition in Louisville say they have canceled The Cup Zone
because of a money shortage.
Karl Schmitt is the executive director of the group that is
planning several festival-style events called The Cup Experience.
He said the 2008 Kentucky legislature funded only $1.55 million of
the group's $2.4 million request and stipulated that the entire
amount had to go to security and transportation-related costs.
Organizers had hoped to raise $250,000 from corporate sponsors,
but that didn't happen.
Schmitt said other community events will continue, with one or
two being expanded. The activities are designed to complement the
Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club, but the PGA of America is not
involved in their planning or funding.
Tara Guenthner, Ryder Cup tournament director for the PGA, said
she expects there will be lot of great events even without The Cup
