Kentucky Speedway will not host Sprint Cup race in 2009

SPARTA, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky Speedway's wait for a coveted NASCAR
Sprint Cup race will last at least another year. The 1.5-mile
tri-oval was left off the circuit's 2009 schedule.
The track will host the NASCAR Nationwide Series race on June 13
and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck race on July 18 as well as the
annual IndyCar event on Aug. 1.
While NASCAR announced several changes on Tuesday for its most
popular circuit next year, the changes didn't include a stop in
Kentucky.
The track is in the process of being sold from a group led by
Jerry Carroll to Speedway Motorsports Inc. SMI president Bruton
Smith said recently he held out faint hope that the track would be
able to land a Sprint Cup race next year, but cited an ongoing
antitrust lawsuit filed by the speedway against NASCAR and
International Speedway Corp. as a major obstacle.
The case was thrown out in January, but an appeal has been filed
and Carroll said he has no intentions of abandoning the case.
