RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior football player Brandon Gathof was named a preseason second team All-American by the Sports Network Friday. Gathof, a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference pick at defensive back, was one of five OVC players to make the list.
The native of LaGrange, Ky., is among Eastern Kentucky’s top returning defensive players. Gathof finished with 91 tackles and five interceptions last season. Both of those numbers ranked second on the team. He posted a career-best 13 tackles in the 2007 NCAA playoff game at Richmond. In the win at Austin Peay last November, Gathof recorded two interceptions and six tackles to earn OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Eastern Kentucky will be in search of its 31st consecutive winning season and 20th Ohio Valley Conference title in 2008. Last year, the Colonels advanced to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs for a record 18th time and went undefeated against OVC competition. The Colonels kick off the fall season at Cincinnati on Thursday, Aug. 28.
