Hyland's Record Day Leads MSU Past Campbell

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Defensive back David Hyland and linebacker Wes McDermott led a Morehead State defensive effort that keyed a 42-7 Pioneer Football League win over Campbell in the 2008 season finale Saturday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.
Hyland, MSU's career interception leader, picked off two more in his final game as an Eagle. He returned his second interception a school-record 100 yards for a touchdown. That return broke a school record that had stood for more that 75 years, dating to 1931 when Claude Clayton returned an interception 98-yards for a score against Union. Hyland also caught one pass for 26 yards and had 126 all-purpose yards.

McDermott was credited with 12 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, and two pass break-ups.

MSU ends the season 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the PFL. Campbell ends its first season in the PFL at 1-10 overall, 0-8 in the league.

MSU out-gained Campbell 380 yards to 105 yards. The Eagles rushed for 260 yards and passed for 120. The Fighting Camels were limited to 64 yards rushing and 41 yards through the air.

Jerrod Pendleton led MSU rushers with 63 yards on eight carries and scored one touchdown. Senior Erick Fitzpatrick had 58 yards on 12 carries with a score. Quarterback Jared Phillips hit seven of 15 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Senior receiver Nick Feldman caught two passes for 32 yards and a touchdown and picked up 61 yards on punt returns.
