New UK coach John Calipari has received word that Wildcat signee G.J. Vilarino is seeking a release from his letter of intent.
Vilarino, who was recruited by Billy Gillispie, is a 5-foot-11 point guard from McKinney, Texas.
After talking with the new UK coach, Vilarino and his father, Gerry, agreed that a change in plans was necessary.
Gerry Vilarino told 27 SportsFirst that he expects UK to grant the release sometime on Thursday.
"Coach Cal really values the bigger kind of guards and G.J. is not that size of player," Gerry Vilarino told WKYT's Rob Bromley.
"In his particular system, G.J. probably wouldn't have flourished as much. Coach Cal is a gentleman. He handled it the way you'd expect someone of his caliber to handle it. We really agreed to do it this way because it made sense for them and for G.J."
