The Lexington Blackstones Rugby Football Club has advanced to the national level of the Division III men's rugby playoffs.
The club of amateur players from Lexington and Central Kentucky will compete May 16-17 in Columbia, S.C., in the Eastern pool of the 16 teams who have advanced to the national level. As the No. 1 seed in the Eastern pool, the Blackstones will compete to advance to the Division III final four.
The Blackstones advanced to nationals with an 11-10 win Saturday, April 25 over Cleveland East Suburbs in Grand Rapids, Mich. Vince Gross made a penalty kick with two minutes to play to give the Blackstones the lead. The victory followed playoff wins over Erie RFC and Fort Wayne RFC.
This is the furthest the Lexington Blackstones have advanced in the playoffs. A key to this season's success has been more depth after recruiting more players, both with and without experience.
