iHigh, Voice of the Wildcats, to conduct broadcasting seminar

Aspiring sports broadcasters in Kentucky will soon have a unique opportunity. They’ll get to practice their skills with Tom Leach, the “Voice of the Kentucky Wildcats,” as well as with other college and high school announcers.

iHigh.com, America’s High School Sports Network, is offering the “First Annual iHigh Sports Broadcasting Camp featuring Tom Leach” on Saturday, August 15, at its offices in downtown Lexington. This daylong free seminar will teach current and would-be sports broadcasters the basics of the profession and will provide tips and practice game experience.

“iHigh.com will be broadcasting some 10,000 games in the next year through live streaming on our Web site,” said Tim Campbell, president and CEO of iHigh.com. “While broadcast veterans will call some of the games, many will be announced by young high school talent who will be the future of the broadcasting industry. We’ve asked Tom Leach to work with these young announcers and to mentor them before they get in the booth for their first broadcast.”

“Most people don’t get a chance to have someone teach them how to get behind the microphone and bring all the excitement to an audience,” said Tom Leach. “I hope to give insight as to how my career took shape and work with first timers, or folks already in the business who want to get better at what they do.”

“I wish I had this opportunity when I first began to broadcast games,” adds Neil Price, play-by-play announcer for UK baseball and women’s basketball.

“This experience will be so valuable to folks at every level of broadcasting, a once in a lifetime event for most folks,” adds Bill Whitaker, a high school broadcast veteran. “I wouldn’t miss it and I’ve been calling high school games for over 15 years.”

The camp is free, but available only to the first 50 people who sign up. Participants will have the opportunity to call a portion of a college game from Leach and other collegiate announcers. All participants will receive a keepsake CD.
