Eastern Kentucky Improves To 2-0 In OVC Play

MURRAY, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team forced three turnovers on the way to a 23-13 victory over Murray State Saturday evening at Roy Stewart Stadium. The No. 20 Colonels (2-1, 2-0 OVC) have now won eight of the last nine meetings against the Racers (1-3, 0-1).

Besides forcing three turnovers, EKU’s defense held Murray State to 12 total yards rushing and compiled six sacks. Junior Jordan Dalrymple led Eastern with six tackles and two sacks. Redshirt freshman Justin Bell recorded his first two career interceptions, including a pivotal interception in the Colonel end zone in the third quarter.

Eastern never trailed in the game as senior C.J. Walker opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to make the score, 6-0. Walker finished the game with a team-high 17 carries for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

After the two teams exchanged field goals, Murray State’s second turnover led to another Eastern Kentucky touchdown. Junior Marcus Williams picked off a batted Racer pass, giving the Colonel offense starting field position near midfield. Redshirt freshman quarterback T.J. Pryor quickly completed two big pass plays of 30 and 19 yards to move EKU inside the Murray State 10-yard line. Walker capped the drive with a two-yard scoring run.

EKU finally put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter with a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Pryor completed all three pass attempts on the drive while going 11-for-14 overall (78.6 percent) for 174 yards through the air.

Next weekend, Eastern Kentucky will play its third road contest in four games at Eastern Illinois. Kick-off on Oct. 3 is slated for 2:30 p.m. ET.

--EKU has won 21 of its last 22 games dating back to 2006.

--Running back C.J. Walker tallied his first rushing touchdown of the year in the second quarter.

--Wide receivers Ryan Aldrin and Orlandus Harris each hauled in their first collegiate receptions. Aldrin notched a 30-yard reception in the second quarter while Harris caught a 15-yard pass in the fourth quarter.

--Jeremy Caldwell had a 99-yard kick-off return for a touchdown negated due to a penalty in the second quarter.

--EKU’s defense has forced at least two turnovers in nine of the last 10 games dating back to last year.

--Murray State had one yard of total offense in the first quarter.
